In honour of the late Dr. Schofield, it is the mission of the Dr. Schofield Memorial Committee to create a memorial statue and garden in remembrance of his life and dedication to the people of Korea.
Who was Dr. Schofield and why do we want to commemorate his life. Dr. Frank William Schofield was born in England in 1889. In 1907, he emigrated to Canada. Dr. Schofield began a long and illustrious academic career at eh University of Toronto, first obtaining his undergraduate degree followed with a PHD degree in veterinary science, also from the University of Toronto. In 1913, he married with Alice, a young pianist and musical partisan. Soon after, in 1916, the young couple embarked on a life altering experience, traveling to Korea as Presbyterian missionaries.
At this time, Korea was occupied by a brutal Japanese Imperialist government. The Korean people suffered under hostile foreign occupation and severe oppression, The brutalities of the Japanese government wee unprecedented in its attempt to demolish any challenge to the complete annexation of Korea. An underground movement to regain Korean independence grew readily, quickly gaining popularity in what seemed to be a hopeless situation. ...more
